Haunted Shepherdstown
New Destination America show to display life in Shepherdstown, the United States alleged most haunted town.
Ghosts of Shepherdstown is a six part series that will be premiering on Destination America on June 10th. The show focuses on the town of Shepherdstown, West Virginia, which claims to be the most haunted city in the United States. With residents calling 911 for assistance with supernatural happenings, and the police department feeling that it would be wise to work alongside a team of paranormal investigators, it makes one question whether or not this claim is true.
Shepherdstown is a small city located in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. The Potomac River flows close to the eastern edge of town separating West Virginia from Maryland. The 2010 United States census only had 1734 residents living within the town. It also holds the claim of being the oldest city in the state with settlers first arriving in 1730 with the city being chartered in 1762. With a city that has been in existence for all these years, there is always so dark history somewhere. For Shepherdstown, their incident was enough that not only should the town be haunted, but it could easily make it the most haunting town in the country.
The Battle of Antietam, which is considered one of the bloodiest days in the Civil War, happened across the Potomac in Maryland on September 17, 1862. After the battle, General Robert E. Lee led his Army of Northern Virginia across the river to Shepherdstown. With him came between 5,000 to 8,000 Confederate casualties, requiring that every home, church, business, and even alley in the town become a makeshift hospital. After being in town a few days, the Union army followed, and the Battle of Shepherdstown commenced on September 20th. This battle alone cost 261 Confederate and 361 Union soldiers their lives. This is on top of the dying from Antietam. This is a lot of loss for such a small town to see within the course of three days. With all this added to the tragic bits of history that most towns possess, there is no wonder why there is a preternatural imprint left on its environment.
On the show, chief of police, Michael King has reached out for aid in assisting with 911 calls that his office is receiving that are paranormal in nature. The investigators that are there to help are Nick Groff of Paranormal Lockdown and Ghost Adventures fame, Bill Hartley, a tech expert, and Elizabeth Saint, a sensitive specializing the paranormal. At the beginning of each episode, a call requiring their specialized assistance is received, and the team is off with the hopes of catching evidence of supernatural occurrences. A town historian is brought in to give insight as to what or who could be stirring up things at the location as well.
Whether or not the town holds up to its claim to be the most haunted town is yet to be seen, but fans of the paranormal television do not have long to wait until the first glimpse of the city’s activity fills their screens. If the claim holds true, Shepherdstown will easily become a destination location for paranormal investigators.
